The Beloved of Goddess Lakshmi - Upper Ahobilam
The Malola Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple is one of the most beautiful and spiritually significant among the sacred Nava Narasimha Temples of Ahobilam. Situated amidst the picturesque Nallamala Hills in Upper Ahobilam, Andhra Pradesh, the temple is surrounded by lush forests, rocky hills, flowing streams, and breathtaking natural scenery. Revered by devotees across India, Malola Narasimha represents the compassionate, peaceful, and loving aspect of Lord Narasimha. Unlike the fierce form worshipped at Ahobila Narasimha Temple, the deity here radiates divine grace, mercy, and affection, making it one of the most cherished shrines in the entire Ahobilam pilgrimage.
The name "Malola" is derived from two Sanskrit words: "Ma", referring to Goddess Lakshmi, and "Lola", meaning beloved or dearly loved. Thus, the name Malola literally means "The Beloved of Goddess Lakshmi." In this sacred form, Lord Narasimha is seated majestically with Goddess Lakshmi on His left lap, symbolizing eternal love, compassion, prosperity, peace, and divine protection.
According to the sacred Ahobila Sthala Purana, Brahmanda Purana, and Sri Vaishnava tradition, after Lord Narasimha destroyed the demon king Hiranyakashipu, His divine anger shook the entire universe. The Devas, sages, and celestial beings were unable to calm His fierce form. At that moment, Goddess Mahalakshmi approached the Lord with devotion, compassion, and divine love. Her gentle presence pacified the Lord's anger, and He assumed this serene and benevolent form, blessing all devotees with kindness and protection.
One of the greatest historical and spiritual significances of Malola Narasimha Temple is its inseparable connection with the Sri Ahobila Mutt. According to tradition, the first Jeeyar, Sri Adivan Sathakopa Yatheendra Mahadesikan, received the Malola Narasimha Utsava Murti directly through the divine grace of Lord Narasimha. The Lord personally commanded the saint to establish the Mutt. Since that sacred event, the Malola Utsava Murti has remained the presiding deity of the Ahobila Mutt, travelling with every Jeeyar across India for over six centuries.
Historically, the temple flourished under the patronage of several South Indian dynasties, including the Kakatiya Kings, Reddy Kings, and the mighty Vijayanagara Empire. During the reign of Emperor Sri Krishnadevaraya, the temple received generous royal patronage. Built in the traditional South Indian stone style, it blends harmoniously with the surrounding mountains, preserving the natural beauty and serenity of the Nallamala Hills.
The temple is located along the sacred trekking route from Ahobila Narasimha Temple toward Jwala Narasimha Temple in Upper Ahobilam. Pilgrims pass through dense forests and beautiful natural surroundings before reaching the shrine. The peaceful environment creates a deeply spiritual atmosphere that inspires meditation and devotion. The deity of Malola Narasimha beautifully represents the balance between strength and compassion, revealing that His true nature is one of infinite mercy.
Devotees believe that worshipping Sri Malola Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy removes sorrow, grants family harmony, blesses marriages, brings prosperity, protects children, removes obstacles, and bestows both material well-being and spiritual progress. As one of the nine sacred manifestations, the temple reminds devotees that while the Lord possesses immeasurable power to destroy evil, His greatest nature is His boundless mercy toward those who surrender with faith and devotion.
